On October 30, 1999, we joined Organizing Committee Co-chairmen Ellen Freedman and Laurie McFadden and fellow Atlantic Tall Club members Marie and Bob Austin for a weekend of exploring Portland, Maine, to evaluate it as a site for TCI Convention 2001. Susan and Ellen had made a trip to Portland a month before to do some preliminary investigation. When we arrived on the 30th after the two-hour drive from home in Newton, Massachusetts, Ellen and Laurie had already spent a couple of days checking out hotels and attractions. They lead us through three potential host hotels (the Sheraton became the hotel of choice) and then took us to the Portland Public Market before driving fifteen or twenty minutes north to Freeport, a town with lots of interesting places to go such as "The Mangy Moose," a store selling everything moose. We poked around the flagship L. L. Bean store and went to a funky brewpub called Gritty McDuff's for dinner. |
